Tuesday, September 5th, 2006, 6:30 PM Potluck dinner
Renew acquaintances and meet new people sharing your interest in birding. We will swap information about the fall migration, birding events and programs. Late summer potluck is a cornucopia of everything fresh and good in Midwest markets. Bring a dish to share as well as your plate and your own place setting. We’ll catch up on summer happenings and watch a video to help brush up on birdwatching skills for fall migration. Just show up.

The massive Monarch butterfly migration is in high gear. Hundreds of millions are flying from Canada and U.S. locations to Mexico. Doug Taron, Director of the Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network, present new insights on one of the most impressive natural events of any species. The Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network is a citizen scientist program monitoring the health of butterfly populations throughout northeastern and central Illinois.

Len Messineo explores the history, current status, and expectations for the future of the complex system unique to south Florida known as the Everglades.
Len is a dedicated nature and wildlife photographer who inspires reverance for nature's manifestations through his photography. His presentations on Florida's bird life and Africa are widely acclaimed.

Lynn Hepler of the Lake County Forest Preserve District will describe why Lake County is a refuge for more endangered species than nearly any other county in Illinois.

Recover from New Year's celebration with a wholesome potluck dinner. After dinner we’ll exchange stories of our adventures, slides, photos, books, etc. Learn about winter birds and early spring arrivals. A lovely break for the middle of winter.

The winter of 2004-2005 saw the most spectacular Great Gray Owl invasion into Minnesota and elsewhere ever reported. Dave Johnson, local author and tour leader shares his experiences from leading expeditions to Minnesota to see these and other owls and birds during that exciting winter.

Perennial favorite Tony Szabados will take us on a visual tour of his choices for the best birding locations in North America. If you are planning a birding trip, want to get the local skinny on specific places or just want to expand your knowledge of regional birding habitats, this presentation is ideal for you.

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007, 7:00 PM The Coming Migration & Bird Banding
Lake Forest College biology professor Caleb Gordon has been running a bird-banding program for several years and tracking the spring migration in Lake County. He will present an overview of the Shaw Woods Avian Monitoring Project (SWAMP), a research initiative he began in 2002 in Lake Forest dedicated to studying the biology of bird migration and to spreading appreciation for birds in the greater community.
This presentation will cover the basic design and goals of the project, the bird netting and banding procedures used, some preliminary results of the project, and will include slides of the great diversity of songbirds that flood through the Chicago region each spring. Information will be provided on how to get involved in this volunteer-based project.
Attendance at this program is ideal preparation for May 2007 bird banding field trip at the Skokie River Nature Preserve.

Lynn Hepler, Lake County Forest Preserve District will reveal the private lives of birds and how habitat can be an important clue in finding them. This program will be a good start for spring birdwatching.

Bring your ideas and opinions to help formulate the 2007 - 2008 season of programs and events. Assume a leadership position or help select the ones who do at our officer delegation supper. Enjoy participating in our program development while eating other peoples' better cooking at our end of season pot luck dinner. Match your White Castle burgers against the homemade apple pies and good-for-you greens & grains. Recipe cards welcome. Bring your own plates and eating utensils.
