Illinois Audubon Society Fall Gathering

September 11, 12 & 13, 2009

Over 170 people registered to spend a weekend birding along Lake Michigan as well as inland in many Lake County forest preserves at the fall IAS meeting September 11-13 hosted by Lake/Cook Chapter – the northernmost IAS outpost and the first stop in Illinois for our feathered friends heading south to their wintering grounds.

Field trip options ranged from some of Lake County’s richest birding spots to storied migrant magnet Montrose Harbor/Magic Hedge in Chicago, a raptor rehabilitation center located in a sprawling house in the suburbs, and more.

Other weekend highlights included a Friday night program on Roger Tory Peterson, a Saturday night presentation on the facts and fictions of bird migration, and a special Saturday afternoon wine and cheese reception at the home of a well-known TV journalist which includes a formal garden as well as areas of wetland and prairie restoration.

Headquarters for the weekend were the brand new Hilton Garden Inn in Mettawa
, located just off I-294 on Route 60 between Lake Forest and Vernon Hills.
