Beau’s Green Big Year @ Online - Zoom

As even non-birders know from The Big Year book and film, traditional Big Years involve driving and flying thousands of miles to see as many species as possible in a given geographical location in 365 days. For 2020, local birder Beau Schaefer decided to tackle a variation – a Green Big Year – to find as many species as he could by biking, walking and kayaking – no driving allowed.

By the time it was over, Beau had seen 276 species – including many rarities – and biked nearly 6,120 miles – including one 108-mile round trip in a single day. That is believed to be a biking distance record for a statewide Green Big Year as well as a species number record for a cold-weather climate with months of snow and ice.  Join us to hear Beau explain his highlights, his strategies and his adventures from his year-long, no-fossil-fuel birding odyssey.
