Kansas’ Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge are two of the top migratory shorebird staging areas in the United States, serving as key links in a chain of wetlands throughout the Central Flyway that is needed to ensure the survival of a number of shorebird species. The nearby grasslands of the Flint Hills are extremely important to the conservation of the Buff-breasted Sandpiper, a species of high conservation concern, as well as the American Golden-Plover.
