Every fall, 4-6 million raptors are counted from two observation points in Veracruz, Mexico, as they head south to their wintering grounds. The spectacle spans 25 species, including up to 2 million Broad-winged Hawks. During the peak days 200,000 raptors stream past these lookout points, creating the largest concentration of migrating raptors on the planet.
Kashmir Wolf, project coordinator for ProNatura’s Rio de Rapaces (“River of Raptors”) Project in Veracruz, will discuss the phenomenon, monitoring and conservation efforts over the last 30 years, different components of the project, and the diversity of other birds that can be found in local birding spots.
